HISTORY: The year 2008 was an active year at UVTO, ushering in the founding of several clubs and organizations including the UVTO Women’s Club. Barbara Marshall, now deceased, was the original Chairperson; she formatted the club as it remains today. Micky Kurzeka succeeded her as Chairperson. Through her leadership, the club undertook fundraising projects as it moved forward and continued to grow. Micky appointed Sally Allen in January of 2010 to become Chairperson. Among other things, Sally’s mission has been to provide a book of biographies of all UVTO women. With help from board members, Marcia Fogel and Ida O’Donoghue, the book should be available in December 2010.
PURPOSE: The overall purpose of the Women’s Club is to promote friendships among the ladies who live at UVTO. Speakers of diverse backgrounds are invited to give informational presentations that are of interest to all of us.
PROJECTS AND SPEAKERS: Under the leadership of Micky Kurzeka, an estate sale raised over $2,000 for the Employee Appreciation Fund. In addition, the Silent Auction at the first annual Fashion Show in 2009 raised $1,700. We intend to continue setting precedence like these. This year’s Fashion Show will be held September 18th. Coldwater Creek and Draper’s and Damon’s will both be showing. Our wonderful kitchen staff has been very helpful in making this possible.
Speakers have included Jacqueline Berger of Love Light, a story of First Ladies loves, lies and tears. Author Lisa See shared her knowledge of the Chinese culture through "Shanghai Girls." Martha Miller reenacted the life of Amelia Earhart. Deputy District Attorney Daniel Kinney spoke of Elder Abuse and Scams. Each month we are enlightened by intelligent and informed speakers.
CONCLUSION: The Women’s Club encourages all women of UVTO to attend our breakfast meetings. Remember, there is no sign-up for membership; just come, eat and enjoy! The Women’s Club meets the first Monday of each month at 9:00 am. Recommendations for speakers are welcome. Ideas are welcome. You are welcome!
