Crossing the Straits
Even the cloudy day didn’t make leaving Portugal happier for Lisa and Dina. But on a lonely
road just short of the Spanish border, we passed two Canadian boys backpacking, and the day brightened.
We stopped for them, just a few feet into Spain.
While we were parked, eating oranges and tossing out peel, the Guardia Civil tapped on our window.

Five of our neighbors have given extraordinary service for two years as members and officers of the
first Resident Council fully elected by the residents. As they prepare to retire at the end of December,
they have reminisced about their tenure, particularly on what they have found most challenging
in 2010 and what they see as the legacy of their two year term.

In this season of giving, it seems appropriate to feature a couple who have given themselves quietly, but graciously and generously, to help make life pleasant for their UVTO neighbors.
Both Bill and Wini Nichols were born in Whittier, California, where they grew up in families which had been long-time friends at their church.
