Is there a doctor in the house? In University Village? Research and resident opinions agree that yes, there are six retired medical doctors living in our community. (If we missed any, we apologize and will readily acknowledge others we haven’t discovered.)

These six men are geographically scattered around our campus. Two live in the Garden Terraces with their wives: Jon and Judy Hillis are in Evergreen, while Dave and Ronnie Solomon call Sycamore home. Dan Lang is a Creekview, second floor, neighbor of Ross and Rose Goldware. Fred and Nancy Wilcox have a Villa, and "Dr. Bob" Scott’s residence is in Mountainview. All are retired, but what were their medical specializations, and what else do their biographies reveal about them?

DR. ROSS GOLDWARE was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was just eighteen months old, and he lived in Encino for forty-nine years. He graduated from Fairfax High and U.C. Berkeley. His M.D. was awarded at Creighton University School of Medicine, his internship was at Fordham Hospital and he did graduate work in Ear, Nose, Throat – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital in Chicago.

After two years in private practice in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, Ross joined Kaiser-Permanente L.A. in 1953 and opened the ENT Department at Kaiser Panorama City in 1962 where he remained as Chief until 1974. Continuing his practice until 1995, he was Assistant and Associate professor of ENT – Head & Neck at USC County Hospital and is now Emeritus.

DR. JON HILLIS began life in Alliance, Nebraska; grew up in several Nebraska locations with short stays in Monrovia, CA and Phoenix, AZ. His alma maters are Teachers’ College H.S. at University of Nebraska, Haverford College, PA, and Temple University School of Medicine. For thirty years, 1967-1997, Jon practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Thousand Oaks, where he was a co-founder of both the Lombard Medical Group and the Oak Tree Medical Building. His professional ties are with the Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where he has been a member of the medical staff, Chief of OB-GYN and Chief of Staff, and on the Board of Trustees. Jon is also a Past President of the American Cancer Society of Ventura County East.

DR. DAN LANG was raised in Chicago and attended University of Chicago, Miami U of Ohio, Kansas U School of Medicine and University of Illinois College of Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dan was in private practice from 1956 to 1975, and was Medical Director of Brotman Medical Center, Valley Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospital Association of Southern California. His professional interests include physician-hospital relations, quality assessment and improvement, regulatory compliance and accreditation, physician health and wellness as quality determinants, palliative care and bioethics.

"DR. BOB" SCOTT, as he is known best on campus, was born in Crystal, North Dakota, but graduated from Los Angeles High School. An ardent Trojan, Dr. Bob holds baccalaureate and medical degrees from USC and USC Medical School, and was a pediatric resident at USC-Los Angeles County Hospital. Associated with Beaver Clinic, Redlands, and Branch Clinic, Hollywood, and in private practice for twenty years, it would seem that Dr. Bob followed his patients long enough to consider some geriatric specialization. He moved to UVTO from the San Fernando Valley.

DR. DAVE SOLOMON is Boston born and bred, educated at Brookline High School, Brown University and Harvard Medical School, with post-doctoral training in Boston. After serving as a Senior Assistant Surgeon with the US Public Health Service, Dave developed many ties to UCLA. There he was an instructor in medicine, professor of medicine, chairman of the department of medicine at Harbor General Hospital, executive chairman of medicine UCLA, Associate Director Geriatric Medicine Division and Founding Director of the UCLA Center on Aging. He has been President of the Association of Professors of Medicine, a member of several professional associations and has received numerous Academic Society awards.

DR. FRED WILCOX’s birthplace was Salt Lake City, but his childhood was spent in southern California, in Huntington Park and Hollywood. Fred is also a USC and Temple University School of Medicine graduate, did his internship at USC-Los Angeles County Hospital. A Mayo clinic Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Master of Science in Ob-Gyn, University of Minnesota, are among his accomplishments. Fred practiced in Stockton, CA from 1957 to 2008, where he was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Joseph’s Hospital and on the teaching staff at San Joaquin County General Hospital. His main professional interests were in gynecological surgery.

These guys are a prolific bunch, too! Around all that time spent in education, together they produced twenty four children, and now boast thirty-three grandchildren and 17 great-grands! In addition to their common interests in family and sports, they report diverse interests: Ross grows orchids – Bob always enjoyed gardening; both Jon and Bob mention Rotary, International; Dan is a photographer and appreciates art and music; Dave plays bridge and relishes politics/government; Fred is a history buff (and forwards some great e-mail items).

Jon, Dan and Dave are active in UVTO Health and Wellness Committee concerns, especially the Fall Prevention emphasis and the quality of care at Oakview. Newer residents Fred and Nancy are almost finished unpacking "boxes" and becoming more involved, and Dr. Bob can be found most evenings entering the dining room with two or more lovely lady residents as dinner companions.

Thank you, doctors, for choosing to retire at University Village and for being an active part of our lives here as our Noteworthy Neighbors.
