THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – Residents of University Village in Thousand Oaks, Calif., had a firsthand look recently at the new KCLU Broadcast Center at California Lutheran University, located across the street from the retirement community. KCLU – the home of National Public Radio for Ventura and Santa Barbara counties – completed the $3 million facility earlier this year. At 6,900 square feet, the two-story building dwarfs the old, 400-square-foot facility. KCLU’s programming includes music, news, world events and talk shows. THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – Lee Bates, Mary Ann Harris and Richard Luke recently emerged as the winners of the 2011 putting competition at University Village in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Bates took home the first-place prize, Harris earned second place and Luke finished third to beat out dozens of residents competing in the popular tournament played each year on the community’s putting green.

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – University Village, the continuing care retirement community in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced new additions to its team of culinary experts.
Leading the team is Food and Beverage Director Louis Ludwig, with more than 30 years of executive food service experience. Ludwig, a resident of Camarillo, Calif., directs all food service for the community 365 days a year for more than 500 residents. Women's right to vote in the 1920 Presidential election and thereafter hinged on the decision of the Tennessee legislature on August 18, 1920. Thirty-five states had already ratified the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Only one more was required and Tennessee was the only state willing to call a special session before the election. Serendipity is the discovery of something valuable when you are looking for something else. The recent slurry seal application certainly provided a serendipitous experience. The Turtles, the more leisurely of UVTO's walking groups, took an unaccustomed stroll off the grounds one morning while our streets were being resurfaced, just looking for their usual, compatible exercise. As they paused in front of Cal Lutheran's Early Childhood Center, across from our main gate, the group was greeted by Elaine Davis, Director of the Center. She graciously offered them a tour and ultimately suggested a volunteer opportunity for our residents!

The UVTO softball team is just tearing up the Friday night Coed League. At 5-1 we are in sole possession of 1st place! What's more we have generated a lot of resident fan participation! Says Ryan Exline, Executive Director of UVTO, "When we came up with the idea for a team we had no idea we would be having this level of success. Also, seeing the resident interest has been awesome – I can only imagine what the other teams must be thinking when they see the crowds with banners and ample amounts of Cracker Jack coming out to watch...

We just had a wonderful bash here at UVTO where we had over 1,300 visitors to the campus – even Elvis made an appearance!
