"Mary Poppins" Star Visits University Village Thousand Oaks

Make no mistake about it: Dick Van Dyke is still as charming and talented as he ever was, even after 60 years in entertainment.

Richard Wayne Van Dyke, who turns 85 this December, sang a little, danced a little and laughed a lot with a packed audience of residents at University Village Thousand Oaks. The quintessential song and dance man - star of stage, screen and television - entertained the group with anecdotes from his life and career in show business, starting with his early years in Danville, Ill. Incredibly, his hometown produced a number of other Hollywood legends, including Donald O'Connor, Bobby Short, Gene Hackman and, of course, his brother Jerry Van Dyke.

Retired for the past 10 years (although he says, "I've retired so many times, now that's getting old"), Van Dyke keeps busy with tap dancing, swimming and yoga. He also goes to the gym every day. "I have arthritis, but I find it really helps to keep moving."

His newest passion is performing in a musical quartet composed of Dick and three 30-somethings. The group recently performed at Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C., for President Obama and Desmond Tutu, and is scheduled to perform at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood in December. "I'm having the time of my life," he said.

After a brief overview of his life and career at the special presentation at University Village, Dick turned the program over to the audience, who had more than a few questions for the popular entertainer.

Van Dyke wrapped up his appearance at University Village with a little soft shoe and a few bars from such Mary Poppins' standards as "Feed the Birds" (Walt Disney's favorite), "I Love to Laugh" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."

At age 85, life is still a jolly holiday for Dick.
