Bob Eubanks Hosts "Not-So-Newlywed Game" at University Village

During a recent visit to University Village, Bob Eubanks, host of the original "Newlywed Game," showed why he is still one of America's
best-loved television personalities. Interspersed with fun clips from the popular game show and stories about his Hollywood experiences, Bob shared his philosophy about successful marriages and how to bring out the best in people.

"In the early days of the show, we would just tell the couples to go out there and be funny," Bob said. "That didn't work so well. Then I learned if I asked them personal questions about themselves, they would bare their souls. I also discovered if you laugh at people, they'll give you nothing. But if you laugh with people, they'll give you everything."

After his brief talk, Bob hosted a "Not-So-Newlywed Game" for residents and guests of University Village. Contestants were residents Loren and Carol Scott, married 53 years; Erik and Ruth Jorgensen, married 56 years; and Mort and Barbara Katz, married 46 years. Also competing were Thousand Oaks residents Ken and Michele Mateer, married 37 years. The Mateers were contestants on the "Newlywed Game" in May 1974, when they won the grand prize. Their winnings? Two reclining chairs, a coffee table and a year of free Coca-Cola.

Eubanks' questions for the University Village contestants ranged from "What's your husband's most annoying habit?" to "Name the strangest place you ever got really romantic." The show ended with a bonus round, giving the Mateers the final victory. This year's prize: a $100 gift certificate to Mastro's Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks, and a chance to reconnect with Bob Eubanks after more than three decades.
