Noteworthy Neighbors: Dr. Dan Lang

Noteworthy Neighbors: Dr. Dan Lang

The eye of a visitor entering Dr. Dan Lang's Creekview home is immediately drawn to a wall-hung collection of masks, primarily from Africa and Mexico. Enamel-on-copper plates, a Chagall print, Japanese ivory figurines, a painting depicting the devil's operating room, a granddaughter's painted ceramic "face"; all are parts of an art collection influenced by a lifelong interest in things artistic.

But the professional focus of Dr. Lang's life has been his career in the world of medicine. Raised in Chicago and married in 1948, he graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School. He served as a military medical officer during the Korean War, and later at the dispensary at the China Lake Naval Ordinance Station near Ridgecrest, Calif. After his discharge in 1954, he completed his medical training at the Veterans Administration Hospital, West Los Angeles. From 1956 to 1975, Dr. Lang maintained a practice in internal medicine in West Los Angeles and Culver City.

Over the years, Dr. Lang's interest turned to the administrative side of health care. He was medical director at Brotman Medical Center from 1974-1986, where he chaired the Bioethics Committee. He also served as president, District 5, Los Angeles County Medical Association, and medical director of a trade association of 220 hospitals in six Southern California counties, dealing with measuring and improving quality of care, and meeting state and federal standards of licensure and accreditation.

At University Village, Dr. Lang is perhaps best known as chair of the Health and Wellness Committee. He was drawn to the community by opportunities to work with management in promoting the health and wellness of residents.

Thank you, Dr. Lang, for enhancing University Village in so many ways as a noteworthy neighbor!
