Having the opportunity to share the stage, literally, with talented college students was on the list for Gene Smith when he was researching which retirement community to move to. As he puts it, "Along with what other folks look for - proximity to good shopping and medical care, great weather and the ability to live in a retirement community that would address my present as well as future needs, I was also looking to continue my love of theatre. By choosing a community right next door to a liberal arts university, I felt that many opportunities would be made available to me."
The play that Gene Smith and other University Village residents and Cal Lutheran (CLU) students are participating in is called Generations. As Professor Ken Gardner, the plays director, explains, "The students are learning from University Village residents, and the residents are learning from the students. It has been a valuable exchange that has fostered a deeper understanding and greater respect for each other. It has also been wonderful to be involved in a project that demonstrates how listening to each other and building relationships can overcome the barriers often faced when communicating with different generations."
The opportunities to enjoy the benefits of living near CLU are numerous. Whether it is taking in a rollicking Shakespeare comedy while sitting under a summer's starry night, or embarking on a new challenge of a painting class or world religions course, University Village residents really appreciate the ability to enhance their lives beyond the community's 65 acres. "Having this relationship truly made the difference for us when evaluating potential retirement communities," says Blaine Shull. "Choosing a Continuing Care Retirement Community to spend these important years was never in doubt, and since we have always valued the importance of maintaining intellectual curiosity as part of a healthy and active lifestyle, University Village was absolutely the right choice for us."
Resident Nick Minick, who is participating in Generations, had his own take on this important relationship. "Some people might think of this as a one-way street residents enjoying what the university provides in the way of intellectual and cultural experiences but I sincerely feel the University is getting something powerful in return." Dr. Ken Gardner concurs, "The very notion of a successful University requires a diversity of backgrounds found within each and every classroom. By reaching out to and involving University Village residents in the life of CLU, we enhance every student's educational experience."
