Groundbreaking
University Village Thousand Oaks, the first continuing care retirement community to be built in Ventura County, held formal groundbreaking ceremonies on Thursday, March 31, before 300 future residents, city officials, representatives from California Lutheran University and other well-wishers.
Turning the first bits of dirt were three of the first people to reserve homes at University Village, Evelyn Ballsun and Mr. and Mrs. John Shearer. Also on hand were Dr. Luther Luedtke, president of Cal Lutheran, and representatives from Continuing Life Communities (CLC), the owner/operator of University Village.
According to Warren Spieker, vice president of Continuing Life Communities, the owner/operator of University Village, the future residents of the 65-acre retirement community have been eagerly
anticipating yesterday’s groundbreaking. To date, more than 160 homes at University Village have been reserved, reflecting a strong interest in the continuing care lifestyle.
“The groundbreaking celebrated the start of something very special for many local seniors who have been anxiously awaiting this type of community,” Spieker said. “Many retirement communities provide seniors simply with a place to live, but people today are looking for much more.
“The right mix of services and amenities, including a fine dining program designed to maintain a healthy lifestyle – and the security of knowing that assisted living and skilled nursing care are available in a state-of-the-art facility next door to their home – are just as critical to their well-being. We think that’s the true reason for our success, and we look forward to building a community that will provide peace of mind for so many seniors and their families.”
