''Peabody Hotel West'' at University Village
Seniors at Retirement Community "Make Way for Ducklings"
THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. - The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn., has its famous marching ducks. And now University Village in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has a duck tale of its own.
Fourteen mallards, including the mother, father and twelve ducklings, have settled in at the continuing care retirement community's outdoor lake and gazebo area. According to Warren Spieker, vice president of University Village, the ducklings were born about 10 weeks ago in the community's riparian preserve. They moved into the lake area a few weeks ago and seem to be perfectly at home with their surroundings. The dabbling ducks nest along the lake and are frequently seen parading through the community, oblivious to the daily activities of the residents.
Although several of the residents have taken them under their wing by feeding them wild bird seed, they keep their distance so as not to upset the mother duck.
"For our residents, there is no such thing as an ugly duckling," Spieker said. "This is the second year a family of ducks has adopted University Village, and our residents really enjoy watching them. We hope it becomes an annual rite of spring."
